Vintage Huayruru Tres

Vintage Huayruru Tres

Pillow case front and back made from a  vintage Poncho Huayruru (Red and black) from Achacachi, province of Omasuyos in La Paz

A typical Aymara textile where the dominant design feature is the stripe. It is believed that the stripes were inspired by the topography of the land, the horizontal levels as one traverses the Altiplano.

The significance of colors is important to note. Huayruru (Aymara) and Wayruru (Quechua) is a small red and black seed believed to be a powerful good luck charm used by the Incas for protection. This protection is translated to the Huayruru Ponchos, as they were worn by the ‘Guerreros’. Red represents the blood that has been spilled during the fights for liberation, and the black represents death and the mourning for these fights.

We try to re-use our materials as much as possible, so this piece was made from scraps of a Poncho Jacket.

This is a vintage piece - Made form a Poncho that is 100% sheep's wool and dyed with natural dyes and woven on a ground loom. It belonged to someone for likely decades. We take great care in hand selecting the pieces we choose and while for the most part they are in amazing conditions, these have been loved and used for many many years and therefore aren't perfect 'brand new' items.
